How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business
You can check by hand in about half an hour, if you avoid three mistakes that make the result look better or worse than it is. Or run our free check, which does the same thing in about two minutes.
Checking by hand
- Write the questions your buyers ask. Five to ten of them, in their words, without your business name: "best accountant for a small online shop in Manchester", "which CRM is easiest for a team of five".
- Use a logged-out, private window. Signed in, ChatGPT can lean on your own chat history and memory, so it may mention you because you have talked about yourself before.
- Ask each question two or three times, in new chats. Answers vary. Count how many name you.
- Ask more than one assistant. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity often disagree.
- Write down who is named instead, and the sources. When an answer shows its sources, those pages are where you need to be mentioned.
Three mistakes that give false results
- Asking for yourself by name. "Is Harlow & Finch any good?" will usually find you. Buyers who do not know you yet do not ask that way.
- Trusting one screenshot. One answer is a sample of one. Count across many.
- Forgetting the country. Answers depend on where the person is. Check as your buyers would.
Or let us do it
The free check writes ten buyer questions from your home page, asks ChatGPT and Gemini as a logged-out person in your country sees them, and shows how often you are named, who is named instead and which websites the assistants relied on.
